NECO Alumni, Students, and Faculty Visit DC for Optometry’s Meeting 2017

It was a capital week in Washington, D.C. as the American Optometric Association, the AOA, hosted a record-breaking 2300 students and doctors at Optometry’s Meeting 2017. The annual conference took place from June 21-25, 2017. Faculty, alumni, and current students from New England College, NECO, took advantage of many opportunities to expand their knowledge and community through workshops and exhibit halls displays, as well as networking events throughout the conference.

Events kicked-off with a rally on June 21 on Capitol Hill. During the rally, the profession’s emergent leaders heard from optometry’s champions in Congress and AOA advocacy leaders about current legislative efforts for optometry, as well as the current state of health care.

The full advocacy experience continued as the theme throughout the conference as doctors met with legislators to discuss optometric eye care policies.  Participants were able to access engaging continuing education and exhibit hall displays about current practices and advances in the field, emerging research, cutting-edge technology, and advocacy for optometry.

Students representing each optometric college and school in North America participated in the 26th annual Essilor Optometry Student Bowl. NECO students and alumni were on hand to share the spirit and competitive excitement in the “Jeopardy style” quiz game.  Team NECO captured 2nd place as Fernando Elias, OD ’18 successfully responded to some very difficult questions, receiving $750 dollars and a Volk Pan Retinal 2.2 blue-ringed lens.

On Friday, June 23rd, NECO welcomed over 125 alumni, students, corporate partners and guests to its Alumni & Friends Reception at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.  Handshakes, smiles, hugs, networking and news were the order of the evening.  Serving as honorary emcee, President Clifford Scott provided a College update, including news about the new clinic and pre-clinic build out on Commonwealth Avenue. He also recognized NECO’s corporate partners in attendance.

Dr. Tony Cavallerano, Director of Professional Relations and Margery Warren, Director of Alumni Relations delivered news of upcoming alumni programs, continuing education events, and opportunities to support the College and it's community outreach programs.
