Founded in 1915, Helen Keller International (HKI) is dedicated to saving the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. It is among the oldest international nonprofit organizations devoted to preventing blindness and reducing malnutrition.  We work in 22 countries: 13 in Africa, 8 in Asia-Pacific, and the United States. We currently have more than 180 programs that reach more than 300 million people.

Recognizing a lack of accessible, adequate vision care among low-income children in the United States, HKI established ChildSight® in 1994. This program was designed by optometrists, ophthalmologists, and public health experts to identify children at risk of refractive error, amblyopia and other serious eye conditions and ensure that these children receive eyeglasses and/or referrals for further treatment. In so doing, the program “brings education into focus” ™ for children who would otherwise be left with poor vision – and unfulfilled potential. To date, ChildSight® has screened more than 1.8 million students in the United States and has provided free eyeglasses to over 274,000 children living in some of our country’s poorest neighborhoods.

HKI is continuing its ChildSight® vision screening program throughout the Greater Newark communities and is seeking a consulting optometrist(s) to provide services to middle and/or high school aged students in area schools located in communities, which include: Newark, Irvington East Orange, Orange, Paterson, and Passaic.

Provide vision assessment to middle and/or high school aged students in the Greater Newark areas 1-2 days per month, during the school day throughout the academic year.  The program model includes an initial visual acuity screening, refraction assessment, provision of eyeglasses and/or referral for additional care.

Please describe the nature of your experience as an optometrist and why your experience is well suited to the nature of the work described above. In particular, please be sure to address each of the following points:

• Professional experience working with middle and/or high school aged students

• Status of New Jersey license and professional liability insurance.

• Schedule of fees.

In addition, please provide your CV and three references who may be contacted by HKI. These references should be existing clients with service requirements similar to HKI.

Please submit your proposal to kbeckley@hki.org noting ChildSight-NJ: Consultant Services in the subject line.
