Counseling Services
The goal of the Counseling Service is to help students cope with the many stresses
of acquiring a professional education. This goal is accomplished in two ways:
first, direct services to students (and family members) and second, advising
the administration and faculty on ways to improve the emotional climate at the
College and thereby prevent individual student problems.
The Counseling service provides:
- 24 hour a day, on-call emergency service.
- Information and referral services to students
and their family members.
- Diagnostic and counseling services.
- Consultation and linkage services to
practitioners serving individual students. When a student is receiving care,
the Counseling Service can play a supportive role in assisting the student in
his/her academic program.
|
Peer Advising
Each
first year student in the four year program is assigned a second year student
as a Peer Advisor. The role of the Peer Advisor is to help the first year
student adjust to his/her new life as a NECO student. Peer Advisor and
Advisees discuss issues such as equipment purchases, living in Boston and
approaches to course work. |
Learning Strategies
Students
can meet with the Director of Student Services to review their current study
methods and explore new techniques that may be more appropriate to the academic
and clinical expectations of the College. Test preparation, note taking,
retention of material and time management, are topics that are offered to
individuals as well as in group sessions.

Tutoring Services
The
College provides a peer tutoring system available to all students at no cost.
The goal of the tutorial program is to provide students with the opportunity to
work with academically and clinically successful upper-class students on
material clarification, technical skills, and study skills. Group sessions are provided in conjunction with several first
year courses. Requests for individual tutoring are subject to review by the
Director of the program prior to approval.
Students requesting a tutor, should email
the information requested below to Barbara

Questions & Answers
- Why would I need a tutor? I expect to do well.
We expect you to do well also. The volume of work
at NECO demands that you process information as efficiently and effectively
as possible. Discussing topics with an experienced student has proven to be
very helpful.
-
How do I get a tutor? What subjects are available?
There are sign up sheets outside the Office of Student Services.
Tutoring is available for most didactic courses as well as clinic.
Clinical tutoring is usually provided by residents.
-
How often do I meet with my tutor?
The two of you can decide that. It’s best to
start tutoring as soon as you have questions. Most tutors will not take on new
students before their own exams, so develop a relationship with a tutor early
on.
-
What is my learning style? How can I adapt it to
NECO? How do I best manage my time? How can I remember everything? How can I
best prepare for exams?
Make an appointment to meet with the Director of Student services to answer these questions.
-
I think I need personal counseling. How do I arrange an appointment?
Call Dr. Amy Gerson at (781) 862-5623. She is at
the College one day a week or can see you in her office.
